Chapter 1

My Daughter-in-Law Forced Me to Sign Away Everything—Then I Revealed the Camera That Recorded Twenty-One Days of Crimes.
Vanessa Cole kicked the empty metal bucket across the marble service hallway until it stopped in front of Ruth Bennett’s hands.
Ruth was on her knees.
Her beige blouse was wrinkled.
Her silver-gray hair had fallen loose around her face.
Behind Vanessa, Ruth’s son Daniel stood in a navy suit with his arms crossed, watching his mother like she was an inconvenience instead of the woman who raised him.
Vanessa bent forward and pointed inches from Ruth’s face.
“Get on your knees and sign everything over.”
Ruth slowly lifted her eyes toward Daniel.
He stepped forward, placed a thick legal folder beside the bucket, and pressed a pen into her trembling hand.
“Mom, don’t make this ugly.”
Ruth looked at him for one long second.
Then she signed one page.
Steady.
Too steady.
Vanessa snatched it away.
Ruth’s thumb moved beneath her sleeve and pressed the side button on her smartwatch.
A small vibration touched her wrist.
Then Ruth raised her head.
“I already made it permanent.”
Vanessa’s smile flickered.
Ruth looked toward the old black camera dome above the pantry door.
Vanessa laughed.
“That camera hasn’t worked in years.”
A tiny mechanical click sounded above her head.
Ruth slowly rose from the floor and looked past Vanessa toward the glowing wall sconce.
Inside it, a hidden camera lens rotated.
Ruth met Vanessa’s frightened eyes.
“That one hasn’t.”
The mansion’s front-door chime rang.
Firm footsteps approached from the hall.
Vanessa’s grip loosened.
Documents scattered across the marble.
And Daniel finally understood his mother had not been kneeling in defeat.
May you like
She had been waiting for the recording to finish.
