Chapter 7

Ruth had not sent the evidence only to one person.

That would have been foolish.

Her husband used to say, “If something matters, make sure it has more than one door.”

So Ruth made several.

The smartwatch triggered the mansion’s backup system.

The backup system sent encrypted clips to Ruth’s outside counsel.

A copy went to the private security director.

A notification went to the estate auditor.

Another went to a locked cloud archive Daniel had never known existed.

No screen showed readable details.

No one in the hallway saw where the file went.

But Ruth knew.

That was enough.

Vanessa tried to recover through outrage.

“You recorded me without consent.”

Ruth tilted her head.

“You forced me to kneel and sign property-transfer documents while my son watched.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You’re confused.”

Daniel flinched at the word.

Ruth saw it.

Confused.

That had been the foundation of their plan.

Make Ruth look forgetful.

Then unstable.

Then incapable.

Then dependent.

Then legally manageable.

Ruth took one slow step away from the bucket.

Her knees hurt, but she did not show it.

“I am not confused.”

Vanessa’s eyes flicked toward the sconce again.

The lens remained still now.

Watching.

Ruth continued, “I am documented.”

That sentence ended Vanessa’s outrage.
