Chapter 8

Daniel finally spoke.

“Mom, why didn’t you just tell me?”

Ruth looked at him with quiet disbelief.

“Tell you what?”

“That Vanessa was—”

He stopped.

Vanessa turned toward him sharply.

“That I was what?”

Daniel closed his mouth.

Ruth’s heart hurt despite everything.

Even now, he was afraid to finish the sentence.

Afraid of his wife’s anger.

Afraid of his own guilt.

Afraid of the truth being spoken clearly.

Ruth stepped closer to him.

“I did tell you.”

He looked down.

“When?”

“When she fired Anna after seventeen years.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“When she moved my mail.”

He said nothing.

“When she called me unstable in front of your attorney.”

His eyes closed briefly.

“When she took your father’s watch from the study safe.”

That made him look up.

Vanessa snapped, “That is a lie.”

Ruth’s gaze moved to the sconce.

“No, Vanessa. It is footage.”

The silence after that was different.

Heavy.

Daniel stared at his wife.

Vanessa stared at Ruth.

Somewhere beyond the hallway, the footsteps grew closer.

No one entered yet.

No arrest.

No final confrontation with lawyers.

No ruling.

Only the approach of people who had received enough to come.

Ruth straightened her shoulders.

For twenty-one days, Vanessa had believed delay meant victory.

Now delay belonged to Ruth.
