Chapter 9

The closed white door at the end of the hallway remained shut.
Vanessa kept looking at it.
Escape.
That was what the door meant to her now.
Ruth noticed.
So did Daniel.
“You’re not going anywhere with that folder,” Ruth said.
Vanessa pulled it against her chest.
“These are signed.”
“One page is signed.”
“That’s enough.”
“No,” Ruth said. “It is recorded.”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“You planned this.”
Ruth looked at the bucket.
The scattered papers.
The pen.
The son who had watched.
The sconce that had seen.
“You planned this,” she said. “I survived it properly.”
Daniel whispered, “Mom…”
Ruth did not soften.
Not yet.
Softness had been used against her too many times.

“You stood behind her.”
His face crumpled slightly.
“She said it would protect the estate.”
Ruth’s eyes filled, but her voice stayed steady.
“From me?”
He had no answer.
The front hall footsteps stopped just beyond the service corridor.
Vanessa froze.
Ruth did not look away from her son.
“That is what you need to remember when people ask what happened here.”
The chime had rung.
The camera had recorded.
The evidence had transmitted.
The final outcome could wait.
