Chapter 6

The wall sconce clicked again.
Small.
Precise.
Terrifying.
Vanessa followed Ruth’s gaze upward.
Her mouth parted.
The miniature lens inside the warm light fixture turned gently toward her.
Not dramatic.
Not loud.
Just awake.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“What is that?”
Ruth looked at him.
“What you forgot your father installed.”
His face changed at the mention of his father.
For a moment, Daniel looked less like Vanessa’s husband and more like Ruth’s son.
Then Vanessa grabbed the folder tighter.
“Hidden cameras are illegal.”
Ruth’s expression remained calm.
“In my own service hallway?”
Vanessa looked toward Daniel.
“Say something.”
Daniel swallowed.
But no words came.
That silence was different from before.
Earlier, he had been refusing to defend his mother.
Now he was realizing he might have stood inside twenty-one days of recordings.
The front-door chime rang through the mansion.
Once.
Clean.
Formal.
Vanessa turned toward the sound.
“Who is that?”
Ruth did not answer.
Firm footsteps approached from the direction of the main entrance.
Not rushing.
Not confused.
Expected.
Vanessa’s grip loosened enough for several unsigned pages to slide from the folder.
They scattered across the marble near the bucket.
Ruth looked down at them.
Then back up.
“Careful,” she said. “Those may matter later.”
May you like
Vanessa went pale.
