Chapter 16 - THE LAST DINNER THEY COULD AFFORDMonique sent me a photograph the week before closing.

The dining room.

Chandelier glowing.

Roast on the table.

Crystal glasses.

Almost identical to that night.

Except half the furniture had red moving stickers.

She wrote:

Mom insisted on one last formal dinner.

I stared at the photo.

That was when the title I had privately given that first dinner changed meaning.

It had not literally been their last affordable meal.

They were never going hungry.

But it had been the last dinner where Charles and Sylvia could sit under that chandelier and pretend their lifestyle was permanent because somebody else would always absorb the shortfall.

Two weeks after I walked out, the note matured.

Six months later, the house belonged to someone else.
