Chapter 6 - THE SLAP BECOMES THE STORYBy Monday, the family had a new version of dinner.

Rachel attacked a child.

Nina’s clothes became background.

Sylvia called my sister.

Charles called Andrew’s former business partner.

Somebody told two of my coworkers.

Monique did not participate publicly.

She also did not correct everyone at first.

Then an interior security camera surfaced.

Charles had installed cameras after a burglary scare.

One covered the dining-room entry and part of the table.

No one had mentioned it.

The video showed:

Nina entering barefoot.

Her words.

Sylvia’s admission.

Charles’s comment.

Vivian’s comment.

My slap.

My final statement.

Everything.

Charles sent a clip of only the slap to a family group chat.

That was a mistake.

Because Monique had access to the home-security account.

She downloaded the full recording before Charles disabled sharing.

Then she sent it to me.

I watched once.

I hated myself.

Vivian looked eight.

Because she was eight.

Not Sylvia in miniature.

Not Charles with pigtails.

A child.

She said something vicious.

Then an adult struck her.

Me.

Nina watched.

I called Dana.

“There’s video.”

“Preserve it.”

“I have.”

“Do not edit it.”

“I won’t.”

“Has Monique reported the slap?”

“I don’t know.”

Twenty minutes later I got the answer.

A police officer called.

Monique had made a report.

Not because Charles forced her.

Because she was Vivian’s mother.

That was appropriate.

I arranged to speak with counsel present.

No lies.

No self-defense claim.

No “I was protecting my daughter.”

I told the officer:

“I slapped Vivian once after she insulted Nina. Vivian was seated. She was not physically threatening anyone. I was angry.”

The officer looked almost surprised by how little I fought.

“Do you regret it?”

“Yes.”

“That’s not a legal question.”

“I know.”

Vivian had no injury requiring treatment.

Monique photographed the redness.

No lasting mark.

The case went to the local prosecutor for misdemeanor review.

Charles told relatives I would finally learn consequences.

May you like

Maybe.

He was right about that part.
