Not because Charles demanded every dollar.
Sometimes Andrew offered.
He loved them.
He hated seeing his father humiliated.
He believed he could stabilize things until Charles sold property or reduced expenses.
But Charles experienced each rescue as confirmation that another rescue would come.
Sylvia experienced visible luxury as proof the family had not declined.
When Andrew died, I became the person standing between their expectations and the estate.
I did not play the role the same way.
That made Sylvia furious.
She interpreted Nina’s inexpensive clothes as my rejection of the Mercer identity.
She thought:
Andrew left money.
Rachel refuses to display it.
Therefore Rachel is insulting us.
Then she tried to “correct” Nina.
Throw away the clothes.
Replace them with things Sylvia approved.
Make the child look like the family still had status.
Charles joined because he found contempt easier than admitting dependency.
Vivian copied the contempt because it received laughter.
Monique stayed silent because she depended on the house.
Nobody plotted at a boardroom table.
They simply protected the same illusion from different directions.
