Chapter 11 - The birthday guests
Police interviewed adults.
My mother Elaine:
Megan arrived late.
Seemed restless.
Went to the bathroom twice.
Left early.
She did not see medication.
Henry:
Medication had been missing.
He had not authorized Megan to take it.
Patricia:
Suspected relapse for two months.
Did not want to accuse her without proof.
Robert:
Knew of prior relapse.
Knew of Christmas incident.
Confronted Megan at birthday.
Did not search her bag.
Did not know she moved medication into pantry.
Me:
Knew only vague addiction history.
No recent warnings.
No knowledge of Christmas.
Children were not repeatedly questioned unnecessarily.
Good.
The other parents received only enough information to check that their own children had not ingested anything.
No other child became ill.
No evidence another child accessed the pouch.
That was enormous relief.
One mother called me crying.
“My daughter ate two cupcakes and then said her stomach hurt.”
Probably sugar and panic.
Emergency advice handled appropriately.
