Chapter 9 - Megan comes back

Megan surrendered herself through an attorney forty-one hours after she disappeared.
No SWAT team.
No roadside chase.
Her lawyer, Susan Patel, contacted police.
Megan appeared at the station.
She looked terrible.
I saw only a still image later from court.
Pale.
Hair unwashed.
No makeup.
She admitted:
She had taken prescription medication from Henry.
She had placed several tablets in a small cosmetic pouch because she did not want to carry the labeled bottle.
She brought the pouch to our house on Lucas’s birthday.
She hid it in the pantry after becoming worried Robert might search her purse.
There.
Why would Robert search her purse?
Because he had asked:
“Are you using again?”
Shortly after she arrived.
I had been outside hanging balloons.
I never heard.
Megan became angry.
She moved the pouch from her handbag into our pantry.
Behind cereal.
She believed Lucas would not find it.
She claimed he had never seen her put it there.
She claimed she did not give him anything.
She claimed she left the birthday before his collapse because she had taken medication herself and realized she should not drive later if she became more impaired.
Terrible judgment multiplied.
Why flee afterward?
Fear.
Withdrawal.
Shame.
She learned from Patricia that Lucas was hospitalized.
Panicked.
Drove south.
Slept in her car.
Called an old treatment sponsor.
Then attorney.
No intent to harm Lucas.
May you like
At least according to her.
The physical evidence and Lucas’s account would have to test that.
