Chapter 10 - David’s explanation of the money

David’s first financial explanation arrived through his attorney.
The inheritance, he claimed, had been used for:
Household needs.
Joint debt.
Business obligations that benefited our family.
Support for Margaret during a temporary financial crisis.
He denied theft.
His statement emphasized:
Sarah had voluntarily shared financial credentials during the marriage.
Sarah had previously authorized inheritance funds for the house.
Sarah had repeatedly told David:
“What’s mine is ours.”
That last sentence was true.
I had said it.
At our wedding.
During tax planning.
When he worried I resented making less money during Emma’s infancy.
But “what’s mine is ours” is not a legal authorization for hidden transfers.
Still, emotionally, his defense had a hook.
Marriage.
Shared life.
Shared risk.
David argued he believed he had broad permission.
