Chapter 22 - Margaret’s apology

Margaret’s first apology was useless.

“I’m sorry the argument got out of control.”

I did not answer.

Second:

“I’m sorry you were injured.”

Still passive.

Third came in writing nearly two years later.

She wrote:

I saw David push you. I knew you had not caused his hands to move. I said, “Now look what you made him do” because I had spent years treating his anger as something women around him were responsible for managing.

I reread that sentence.

Then:

I also knew by then that some money used for my condo came from your grandmother’s inheritance. I told myself married money was family money because that story benefited me.

Better.

Then:

Emma saw me stand over her injured mother and defend the person who hurt her. I am ashamed of that.

No request for access to Emma.

No:

But I love her.

No:

Please forgive me.

I kept the letter.

Did not answer for six months.

Then wrote:

I received it. Thank you for being specific.

That was all.
