Chapter 22 - Margaret’s apology

Margaret’s first apology was useless.
“I’m sorry the argument got out of control.”
I did not answer.
Second:
“I’m sorry you were injured.”
Still passive.
Third came in writing nearly two years later.
She wrote:
I saw David push you. I knew you had not caused his hands to move. I said, “Now look what you made him do” because I had spent years treating his anger as something women around him were responsible for managing.
I reread that sentence.
Then:
I also knew by then that some money used for my condo came from your grandmother’s inheritance. I told myself married money was family money because that story benefited me.
Better.
Then:
Emma saw me stand over her injured mother and defend the person who hurt her. I am ashamed of that.
No request for access to Emma.
No:
But I love her.
No:
Please forgive me.
I kept the letter.
Did not answer for six months.
Then wrote:
May you like
I received it. Thank you for being specific.
That was all.
