Chapter 24 - The divorce

David once told me:

“You live in my house.”

The divorce documents disagreed.

The house was jointly titled.

Purchased during our marriage.

Mortgage partly paid from marital income.

My inheritance had funded $42,000 of renovations, which required tracing but did not magically turn the entire property into mine.

We divided marital assets under ordinary law.

The house had significant equity.

I wanted to keep it.

Then changed my mind.

Too many memories.

The marble island.

The floor.

The foyer phone.

Emma’s yellow pajamas.

We sold.

After mortgage payoff, fees, legal adjustments, and settlement credits, I used my share to buy a smaller three-bedroom house twelve minutes from Dad.

No marble island.

Laminate counters.

I loved them.

Emma chose the bedroom with a purple wall.

Dad complained the garage was too small.

I told him to buy his own house.

He reminded me he had.

Normal conflict.

Wonderful.
