Chapter 12 - Margaret’s condo

The next destination hurt more.

$39,500.

Margaret’s name.

Not directly all at once.

Several transfers ultimately paid:

A delinquent home-equity balance.

Condo association arrears.

Some medical bills.

Margaret had money problems after her husband’s death three years earlier.

She told everyone she was fine.

She was not.

David helped.

I knew he paid one $3,000 medical bill.

I did not know he used almost forty thousand dollars from my inheritance.

Margaret’s attorney argued:

She believed the funds were David’s.

Initially, maybe.

Then investigators found a text between them six months before the kitchen incident.

Margaret:

Does Sarah know you used Ruth’s money?

David:

She knows we’re helping family.

Margaret:

Then don’t keep bringing it up. She’ll only make it ugly.

There.

Not proof Margaret planned theft.

Proof she knew the source.

She chose silence.

Then stood over my broken leg and told me I had made David do it.

That was harder for me to forgive than the wine.
