Chapter 1 - The slap

My husband slapped me at thirty-four weeks and five days pregnant because I told my sister to leave our house.
The argument had started eleven minutes earlier.
Claire showed up without calling.
She stood on the porch in a patterned blouse, dark pants, and flats, holding her phone like she had spent the entire drive rehearsing what she wanted to say.
I opened the door.
“What?”
Her face tightened.
“Emily, can I come inside?”
“No.”
“Please.”
“Did Ryan ask you to come?”
She looked away.
That was my answer.
For two months, my husband had been talking to my sister behind my back.
At first I believed it was harmless.
Claire and Ryan had always gotten along.
She helped him plan my birthday.
He helped her move apartments.
Then my pregnancy became harder.
Not medically dangerous.
Emotionally hard.
I had insomnia.
I cried too easily.
At twenty-nine weeks I had one panic attack in a grocery-store parking lot because I suddenly became convinced I would die during childbirth.
I knew it was irrational.
That did not make the fear disappear.
Ryan started telling Claire:
“Emily isn’t herself.”
Claire began checking on me more often.
I appreciated it until I noticed she somehow knew details I had told only my husband.
The night she arrived, I had seen a message on Ryan’s tablet.
From Claire.
I’m not comfortable signing anything until I talk to her.
I asked Ryan what she meant.
He said:
“Nothing.”
Then Claire appeared twenty minutes later.
So I stood in the doorway and said:
“Tell me what he asked you to sign.”
Ryan came down the hall.
“Emily.”
“No. I’m asking my sister.”
Claire said:
“It isn’t what you think.”
“What do I think?”
She opened her mouth.
Ryan interrupted.
“She came here because you’ve been spiraling all week.”
I looked at him.
“I’m spiraling?”
“You threatened to leave yesterday.”
“I said I would stay with Claire if you kept screaming at me.”
Ryan glanced at Claire.
“See?”
Something in that look made my skin crawl.
I turned back to my sister.
“Claire, get out of here. Right now.”
Ryan crossed the foyer so quickly I had no time to react.
He stepped between us.
Then his hand struck my face.
Hard.
The sound was worse than the pain at first.
My head snapped sideways.
I stumbled.
My hands covered my belly instinctively.
Ryan shouted:
“You’re the one who needs to get out of here!”
Claire made a strangled sound.
“Ryan!”
I stared at him.
My cheek burned.
He looked furious.
Then almost immediately, defensive.
“You came at me.”
“I was standing still.”
“You were screaming.”
“I wasn’t.”
Claire whispered:
“Oh my God.”
I stepped onto the porch.
Rain had started lightly.
Not enough to soak me.
Enough to make the wooden boards slick.
Claire followed.
Ryan said:
“Where are you going?”
I did not answer.
Then Claire blurted:
“He said you’d lose custody after the baby is born.”
I stopped.
Slowly turned.
Ryan’s entire face changed.
“What?”
Claire was looking at him now.
“He told me you were unstable. He said after the baby came, you wouldn’t be able to keep custody.”
Ryan said:
“You’re twisting this.”
Claire stared between us.
“What kind of terrible thing are you two planning?”
That question almost sounded ridiculous.
Then I understood.
Ryan had apparently been telling Claire I had my own secret plan.
Something about leaving.
Something about the baby.
He had built two different stories and put my sister between them.
Ryan pointed toward the living room.
“Claire, get back in the house.”
She didn’t.
“What exactly do you mean by ‘after the baby is born’?”
Ryan went silent.
For the first time since he hit me, I saw something colder than anger.
Calculation.
I reached into my handbag.
My phone.
Ryan stepped forward.
“What are you doing?”
“Calling someone.”
“Emily.”
I backed away.
“Don’t touch me.”
Claire moved beside me.
“I’m taking her.”
Ryan laughed once.
“She isn’t going anywhere with you.”
Claire’s face changed.
“Why?”
“Because she’s my wife.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
One word.
His expression sharpened.
“No what?”
“No, being your wife does not mean you decide where I go after you hit me.”
I called 911.
Ryan did not strike me again.
He did something almost worse.
He lowered his voice.
Put both hands up.
And said:
“Emily, you need to think very carefully about what happens next.”
Claire went completely still.
So did I.
May you like
Because now his words sounded less like a threat born in anger.
They sounded rehearsed.
