Chapter 23 - Claire’s consequence

My relationship with Claire did not return to normal because she helped me after the slap.
For months, I checked every sentence before telling her anything.
If I felt sad:
Would she think unstable?
If I complained about Ryan:
Would she screenshot?
If I said I was tired:
Would it become evidence?
She noticed.
One evening she said:
“You talk to me like I’m a court reporter.”
I answered:
“You were.”
She cried.
I did not apologize.
Then she said:
“What do I do?”
“Stop asking me to make you feel safe.”
That surprised both of us.
She nodded.
Then she changed behavior.
No forwarding.
No discussing Ryan.
No giving advice unless asked.
When Ryan’s parents contacted her seeking information, she answered:
Ask Ryan. I’m not involved.
When my aunt asked whether I had postpartum depression, Claire said:
That is Emily’s private medical information.
Good.
Then she made a harder choice.
Ryan’s lawyer asked if she would clarify one prior text that could help him.
She agreed.
Because truth mattered even if it helped Ryan.
Text:
Claire had once said:
If Emily tries to leave the state, call me and I’ll help you stop her.
Context:
Ryan falsely told her I planned Chicago move.
At deposition she said:
“I wrote that because I believed him. Emily had no move planned.”
Both.
No selective truth.
Then Claire apologized again.
Not letter.
Not grand speech.
At my townhouse while folding baby clothes.
“I made myself useful to Ryan because I liked being the calm sister.”
I looked at her.
She continued:
“You were pregnant and messy and scared. He treated me like I was the rational one.”
That sounded painfully human.
“I liked it.”
There.
Not manipulation alone.
Vanity.
Then:
“And I gave him things you trusted me with.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry.”
I folded a onesie.
“I believe you.”
She looked hopeful.
“That doesn’t mean I’m over it.”
Hope faded.
“Okay.”
That was what rebuilding looked like.
Then Noah spit up on her blouse.
I laughed for the first time during an apology.
She looked down.
“Great.”
“Consequences.”
May you like
“Very funny.”
Maybe it was.
