Chapter 26 - The handoff

The first exchange after final orders happened on a Friday afternoon.

No neutral center anymore.

Public library parking lot halfway between our homes.

Ryan arrived five minutes early.

I arrived exactly on time.

Noah slept in the carrier.

Ryan opened back door of his car.

I handed him diaper bag.

“Two bottles in the side pocket.”

“Got it.”

“He had a little rash this morning.”

“Cream?”

“Front pocket.”

“Okay.”

Then:

“Pediatrician appointment Tuesday at ten.”

“I saw portal.”

Good.

No one said:

You tried to take him.

No one said:

You ruined my company.

No one said:

You slapped me.

Not because forgotten.

Because none belonged in the handoff.

Then Ryan looked at me.

“We need to decide daycare next month.”

“Put options in app.”

“I will.”

He took Noah.

Noah woke and blinked.

Ryan smiled.

“Hey, buddy.”

I hated that my heart hurt at the tenderness.

Then Noah grabbed Ryan’s shirt.

Ordinary father.

Complicated man.

Both.

Ryan buckled him.

Before closing door he said:

“Emily.”

I stiffened.

Then:

“I’m not asking for anything.”

Good.

“I just wanted to say the schedule is okay.”

I nodded.

“Okay.”

He drove away.

I stood there until the car turned out of the lot.

Then I walked into the library because I did not want to go home and stare at an empty crib.

I found Claire in the café.

She had not told me she would be there.

Actually, she had texted:

I’ll be nearby if you want company. I won’t come unless you ask.

I had not answered.

She respected it.

Then I saw her through glass.

I walked in.

“You waited?”

“Yes.”

“You said you wouldn’t come.”

“I didn’t come to the exchange.”

Fair.

I sat.

She pushed coffee toward me.

Decaf? Postpartum no issue, but maybe normal coffee.

“Thanks.”

Then:

“How was it?”

“Boring.”

“Good?”

“Terrible.”

She laughed.

Then I did too.

My phone buzzed.

Parenting app.

Ryan:

Arrived home. Noah awake.

No photo.

No demand.

No extra words.

I stared at it.

Claire asked:

“Everything okay?”

“Yes.”

That answer was true.

Not forever.

Not absolutely.

At that moment.

Yes.

Then later that evening Ryan sent:

Rash looks slightly better after cream.

I answered:

Thanks.

No court motion followed.

No screenshot package.

No custody threat.

Just a baby with diaper rash.

The final major institutional decisions were done.

Criminal sentence active.

Probation active.

Property closed.

Custody final.

No appeals.

No secret account.

No hidden agreement.

No unresolved “after birth” plan.

Ryan had tried to use the future as leverage.

May you like

The future arrived.

And it did not obey him.
