Chapter 9 - The affidavit he wanted
Claire’s full message history with Ryan covered fourteen months.
Most ordinary.
Memes.
Birthday ideas.
Family complaints.
Then pregnancy.
At twenty-seven weeks:
Ryan:
Em is getting really anxious. I’m worried what postpartum will look like.
Claire:
She’s scared. That’s different from dangerous.
Ryan:
I know. Just watch.
Then he began asking for examples.
Has she said anything about leaving?
Has she talked about not wanting baby?
Has she said she can’t cope?
Claire answered honestly.
Sometimes yes to general overwhelm.
No to rejecting baby.
Then Ryan started translating.
Claire:
She said she wants one night alone in a hotel after baby if we can help.
Ryan:
That’s what I mean. She already wants to leave newborn.
Claire:
Ryan, one night of sleep isn’t abandonment.
Good.
Then one message at thirty-one weeks.
Ryan:
My lawyer says emergency orders need specific facts, not vibes.
We could not know if lawyer said exactly that.
Could be his paraphrase.
Then:
I need dates.
Claire:
Dates for what?
Ryan:
Anything showing instability.
There.
Then Claire:
I’m not building a case against my sister.
Ryan:
I’m trying to protect my son.
Our son.
We had not decided name.
Then the proposed affidavit arrived.
Claire did not sign.
She sent:
This says things I never said.
Ryan:
Tell me what’s inaccurate.
Claire:
Almost all the conclusions.
Ryan:
The facts are yours. Conclusions are mine.
That sentence mattered.
Then the message five days before the slap.
Ryan:
If she won’t agree to the separation terms before delivery, I may have to wait until after.
Claire:
What does the baby have to do with property?
No response for nineteen minutes.
Then:
Once custody is temporarily stable, everything else gets easier.
Claire:
What does that mean?
Ryan:
She will not risk fighting on five fronts while recovering.
There.
Then:
House, company, money, parenting. Better to resolve together.
Claire:
That sounds awful.
Ryan:
It’s divorce.
Then two days before the slap:
Ryan:
I only need you to tell the truth if there’s an emergency.
Claire:
What emergency?
Ryan:
Postpartum breakdown, refusal to release baby, trying to leave state. Whatever happens.
Claire:
You keep talking like something will happen.
Ryan:
Something always happens after birth.
That line chilled me.
Then the night before the slap:
Ryan:
Come tomorrow. We need to get your statement cleaned up.
Claire:
I’m not signing it without talking to Emily.
Ryan:
Do not tip her off before I can talk to her.
Then she came anyway.
I saw the first message.
The door.
The slap.
Then one final message Ryan sent Claire nine minutes after police arrived.
You just destroyed the only chance to handle this privately.
Claire never answered.
Joanna looked at me.
“Still circumstantial on coercion.”
“How?”
“Because he can say he expected genuine instability and wanted global settlement. Ugly does not equal provable extortion.”
“What would?”
“Something linking temporary custody directly to forcing signature.”
