Chapter 25 - The last ninety thousand

Harper Event Group repaid Noah’s remaining note.
Principal:
$40,000 after earlier payments.
Interest according to note.
Total final payment:
About $43,000.
All his under divorce settlement.
No claim by me.
That meant the original $260,000 bridge had ultimately been repaid by HEG over time.
Did that mean Noah’s transfer caused no marital loss?
Not exactly.
Timing.
Risk.
Control.
Legal fees.
The marital settlement had already allocated those.
He received less of the early escrow.
I received more certainty.
He received note upside.
Then HEG refinanced its remaining senior debt under ordinary commercial terms.
No need for more family bridge capital.
Riverfront Room sale closed permanently.
Company smaller.
Healthier.
Judith remained majority owner but independent controller stayed.
Raymond stayed.
Noah remained board member but not employee.
The business crisis was over.
Then Noah called.
Not about Sadie.
“HEG paid the note.”
“I saw the disclosure.”
“Right.”
Then:
“If I had asked you before transferring, would you have agreed?”
“No.”
He laughed sadly.
“I know.”
“Maybe fifty thousand.”
“What?”
“If you showed me bank documents, maybe I would’ve agreed to a smaller bridge with both our names on it.”
He was quiet.
“So the company could’ve gotten help.”
“Yes.”
“And we might not have divorced?”
“No.”
He laughed again.
“Had to ask.”
Then:
“The secrecy was the thing.”
“One of the things.”
“Mom.”
“Yes.”
“Everything.”
“Yes.”
No neat single cause.
Then the house.
My refinance remained expensive.
I considered selling anyway.
Not because Noah.
Because monthly payment.
Brooke said:
“You fought to keep it.”
“I fought for the right to choose.”
Different.
I ran numbers.
Selling costs.
Moving.
Daycare commute.
Sadie’s stability.
I decided to stay another year and reassess.
No symbolic forever.
Then Judith’s probation officer report:
Compliant.
No violation.
No attempted contact.
No messaging through relatives.
The no-contact period required by family order would soon reach the twelve-month minimum.
Noah and I would need to decide whether to initiate any therapeutic review.
