Chapter 6 - The full banquet footage

Harper Event Group produced the banquet security footage under subpoena and protective order.
Three hours.
Mostly boring.
Staff.
Balloons.
Guests.
Food.
Sadie running in circles around chairs.
Then 3:18 p.m.
Almost two hours before dinner.
Judith entered with Noah.
Camera near service station captured audio.
Judith:
“You cannot keep waiting. The bank meeting is Monday.”
Noah:
“I know.”
Judith:
“And she still won’t sign?”
Noah:
“She hasn’t even seen it.”
“What?”
“I said I wasn’t giving it to her before the party.”
Judith:
“This is exactly why nothing gets done.”
Noah:
“Mom, enough.”
Then:
“If she blows up tonight, at least stop protecting her afterward.”
Noah:
“I’m not trying to make her blow up.”
Judith laughed.
“You’ve been documenting her for months.”
Noah:
“For court if we separate.”
“And you need a reaction.”
Noah:
“I need the truth.”
Judith:
“The truth is she hates me.”
Noah:
“The truth is she gets physical when cornered.”
I stared at the screen.
Rebecca paused.
“Prior physical incident?”
I thought.
One.
Six months earlier, Noah and I argued in the kitchen.
He blocked the doorway.
I pushed past him with both hands on his chest.
No injury.
I apologized that night.
He had never called it abuse.
Now it was in a strategy.
Footage continued.
Judith:
“Then let her show everyone.”
Noah:
“No touching Sadie. I mean it.”
Judith:
“I know how to handle a child.”
Noah:
“No. You don’t touch her. You don’t discipline her. You don’t get in Alyssa’s face.”
This mattered.
He had explicitly told Judith not to touch Sadie.
He did not authorize the slap.
Then:
Judith:
“You want me to sit there and smile while she talks down to me?”
Noah:
“I want you to get through cake.”
Then one line:
“And if Alyssa reacts to words, that’s on her.”
Rebecca stopped the video.
There.
Not a staged assault.
A planned emotional confrontation.
Noah wanted public evidence of how I reacted to Judith’s insults.
Then why?
The footage continued ten minutes later.
Judith and Noah moved closer to camera.
Judith:
“If you get temporary use of the house, she’ll settle the account issue.”
Noah:
“Stop saying that here.”
Judith:
“It’s true.”
Noah:
“The brokerage money is separate.”
Judith:
“It’s all connected.”
There.
Rebecca stared at me.
“The money.”
I nodded.
Then:
Judith:
“Monday. Bank. The note needs to stay with you.”
Noah:
“I know.”
Judith:
“And if she starts forensic discovery, Martin says—”
Noah cut her off.
“Don’t discuss my lawyer.”
Privilege wall.
We did not get whatever legal advice followed.
But we did not need it.
Nonprivileged words already told us:
Temporary house occupancy.
Brokerage dispute.
Bank deadline.
Birthday reaction.
All connected.
Then another clip from 4:02 p.m.
Judith with Sadie near gift table.
Sadie reached toward wrapped box.
Judith caught her wrist sharply.
Not a slap.
Kendra approached immediately.
“Please let her go.”
Judith released.
Noah entered thirty seconds later.
Kendra told him.
He said:
“Mom, I said no touching her.”
Then to Kendra:
“Don’t send Alyssa anything right now. I’ll handle it.”
Kendra:
“She should know.”
Noah:
“After the party.”
There.
He had another chance.
Before cake.
Before the slap.
He chose the party plan over telling me.
Then dinner.
The slap.
My retaliation.
Security video captured everything.
No argument about sequence.
This evidence hurt me too.
I slapped Noah after Judith’s strike.
Then moved around him.
Then shoved Judith when Sadie was no longer within her reach.
Retaliatory.
The prosecutor would see that.
Rebecca said:
“You may face a charge.”
“I know.”
“Do not minimize.”
“I won’t.”
Then:
“Does Noah?”

She looked at the frozen image of him sitting while his mother’s hand struck our daughter.
“He has different problems.”
