Chapter 24 - The house closes

Mark refinanced.

On time.

I received:

$241,000 house equalization.

$85,000 share-appreciation settlement.

Retirement transfer.

Brokerage division.

No hidden last account.

No million-dollar revenge.

I signed deed transfer.

House became Mark’s.

I rented a three-bedroom townhouse six minutes from the girls’ school.

Why rent?

I wanted one year before buying.

Diane told relatives:

“Lauren couldn’t afford to keep the house.”

I could have.

I chose not to.

I almost corrected everyone.

Then stopped.

My finances were not a campaign.

Emma painted her new room pale blue.

Lily chose yellow.

Mark kept their old rooms too.

Two homes.

Not one destroyed family.

Then first supervised Lily visit with Diane.

Three months had passed.

Emma declined.

Lily wanted:

“Grandma, but only if Dad stays.”

They met at a public children’s museum.

Mark.

Lily.

Diane.

Richard joined? Better no, to avoid buffer. A parenting coach perhaps not required by order. Mark supervised himself.

Afterward Lily said:

“Grandma bought me a dinosaur.”

Order allowed reasonable gifts.

Fine.

“Did she say anything about Emma?”

“No.”

“About me?”

“No.”

Good.

Then Mark reported:

Diane apologized to Lily for “being mean at Emma’s birthday.”

Not enough for Emma.

But age-appropriate for six-year-old.

Then Diane asked through Mark if she could write Emma.

Dr. Park advised:

One letter, screened by Mark and me, no pressure.

We agreed.

Diane wrote:

Emma, I broke your cake and said something cruel about you not being a son. That was wrong. You did not cause it. You are not less important because you are a girl. I am sorry. You do not have to answer me.

No:

But your mother.

No:

Tradition.

No:

I was angry.

Specific.

Emma read.

Then put it away.

“Do you forgive her?”

I did not ask.

Dr. Park had trained me.

Emma brought it up later.

“I don’t want to see her yet.”

“Okay.”

No timeline pressure.

Then Mark told Diane:

“She said no.”

Diane replied:

“How long will Lauren let her do this?”

There.

Old instinct.

Mark answered:

May you like

“Mom, Emma said no. Lauren didn’t.”

Progress remained fragile.
