Chapter 4 - Emma asks the question nobody wants
Emma did not care about $417,860.
She cared that her father agreed she was less important than a boy who did not exist.
Rebecca recommended a child therapist experienced in high-conflict family transitions.
Dr. Simone Park.
Not forensic investigator.
Not custody evaluator.
Therapist.
Different role.
In our first parent consultation, she told me:
“Do not ask Emma to build a case.”
“I’m not.”
“You will want exact wording.”
I had already wanted it.
“Don’t.”
Then Emma’s first session.
I waited outside.
No details beyond what Emma authorized and safety information.
Afterward, she sat beside me in the car.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Can Dad still love me if he wanted a son?”
My throat closed.
“People can love someone and still hurt them because of beliefs they haven’t challenged.”
“That’s a yes.”
“Yes.”
She looked out the window.
“Do you still love him?”
Not fair.
She was ten.
Still asked.
“I’m angry with him.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
I almost smiled.
My daughter.
“I don’t know what my marriage will feel like later.”
She nodded.
Then:
“I don’t want Grandma at my birthday ever again.”
“You don’t have to decide forever.”
“I decide next year.”
“Yes.”
That was enough.
Then Lily.
Six.
Her problem was different.
She missed her father.
“Why can Emma say no to Dad and I can’t?”
“You can say how you feel.”
“I want Dad.”
“Okay.”
“Is Emma mad at me?”
“No.”
She was.
A little.
Because children can interpret different attachments as betrayal too.
Dr. Park helped.
No making Lily choose.
Then Mark’s temporary custody affidavit.
He wrote:
“Lauren has encouraged Emma’s estrangement from her father.”
I stared.
Rebecca said:
“Don’t explode.”
“He told her his mother was right.”
“I know.”
“He hasn’t apologized.”
“I know.”
“He says I caused estrangement?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Prove your side with behavior.”
We attached:
Messages where I offered calls.
Park visits.
School schedule.
One invitation for Mark to attend Emma’s soccer practice.
He came.
Emma did not speak to him beyond:
“Hi.”
I did not force.
Then Diane arrived at practice.
I nearly lost my mind.
Mark had not told me.
Diane stayed across the field.
Technically public park.
No court order barred her.
Emma saw her.
Immediately left the field crying.
Coach followed.
That gave Mark a problem.
Not because Diane was legally forbidden.
Because he had been told Emma was distressed and brought the trigger anyway.
He said:
“I didn’t bring her. She came.”
Did he ask her to leave?
No.
Again.
Cowardice.
