Chapter 25 - Richard leaves the table
The final major family confrontation happened at Richard and Diane’s house.
Not mine.
Richard invited Mark and Claire to discuss estate planning.
No Lauren.
No children.
Later I learned because Mark disclosed the relevant part in co-parenting counseling.
Diane wanted to amend her own estate.
Perfectly her right.
She proposed:
Most Mercer Building Components shares to Mark.
Cash/investments split between Mark and Claire.
Grandchildren:
Separate education gifts.
Then she said:
“Mark’s shares should eventually go to a son if he has one.”
Mark laughed.
Not kindly.
“I’m divorced, Mom.”
“You’re thirty-eight.”
“Stop.”
“You could remarry.”
“Stop.”
“Emma and Lily will marry.”
Mark stood.
“My daughters are not temporary Mercers.”
Diane’s face hardened.
“You’re repeating Lauren.”
“No.”
He looked at Richard.
“Dad, say something.”
Old Richard might have stared at table.
This time:
“Diane, leave the girls out of your succession fantasy.”
She stared.
Then Claire:
“And me.”
Diane looked around.
Everyone against her.
That was how she interpreted boundaries.
Betrayal.
Then Richard stood.
“I’m leaving the table.”
Not marriage.
Conversation.
He walked outside.
Claire followed.
Mark stayed long enough to say:
“You can leave your property however you want. But if you use inheritance to make me rank my children, keep it.”
Then he left.
Was that financially costly?
Potentially.
Diane controlled her estate.
Could disinherit him.
Maybe.
No one knew.
That uncertainty was the final lever she had.
Mark chose the children.
Late.
Still chose.
Then he told me during co-parent counseling.
I asked:
“Do you expect me to be impressed?”
“No.”
Good answer.
“Why tell me?”
“Because Emma asked last weekend if Grandma still wanted a boy.”
“What did you say?”
“I said Grandma’s beliefs are Grandma’s responsibility, not hers.”
Better.
Then:
“I didn’t tell her about the estate argument.”
Good.
No child as witness to adult redemption.
Then Diane did not change her estate immediately.
She met independent attorney.
No need for us to know.
Private property.
May you like
Her right.
That boundary applied even when I disliked her.
