Chapter 3

Chloe had always treated outrage like theater.

She knew when to cry.

When to point.

When to tremble beautifully.

When to let her voice crack just enough for people to believe she was wounded instead of calculating.

“My ring,” she cried near the head table. “My million-dollar ring is gone.”

The groom froze.

Bridesmaids rushed around her.

Eleanor stood from her chair slowly, face already hardening into accusation.

Dominic looked uncomfortable but did not move.

Vivienne sat with one hand over her belly, watching the room form a storm around Chloe.

Then Chloe turned.

Not toward the staff.

Not toward her bridesmaids.

Toward Vivienne.

“She was near my purse.”

Vivienne blinked.

“What?”

“You were near my bridal purse.”

“I walked past the table to reach the restroom.”

Chloe stepped closer, veil trembling behind her.

“You always hated me.”

Vivienne felt heat crawl up her neck.

“That is not true.”

Eleanor’s voice cut through the room.

“Open your purse.”

The request sounded like a command because Eleanor had spent years making her commands sound like manners.

Vivienne looked at Dominic.

He stared at the floor.

“Dominic,” she said quietly.

He did not answer.

Chloe became louder.

“Search her! She stole my ring!”

Guests gasped.

Phones lifted, then lowered when security glared.

Vivienne stood slowly, body heavy, balance careful.

“I did not take anything.”

Eleanor crossed the distance between them.

“Then prove it.”

Before Vivienne could step away, Eleanor’s hand closed around the shoulder of her maternity gown.

The first tear in the fabric was small.

The second was public.

By the third, Vivienne understood Eleanor was not searching for a ring.
