Chapter 6

The ballroom doors opened slowly.
That sound was quieter than Chloe’s accusation.
Still, every head turned.
A distinguished older man stood in the doorway, backlit by the corridor’s cooler light.
Beside him was the venue’s security director.
Behind them, two attorneys carried sealed folders.
No one announced who he was.
No one said what he owned.
No one showed a document.
No one revealed the truth of the ring.
But the atmosphere changed instantly.
Chloe’s face lost its bridal performance.
Eleanor’s chin lowered a fraction.
Dominic’s mouth parted.
He knew enough.
That was what Vivienne saw first.
Not guilt.
Not concern.
Fear.
Dominic knew who her father was in a way his mother and sister had chosen to ignore.
During the engagement, Eleanor called Vivienne’s family “comfortable but ordinary.”
Chloe once joked that Vivienne had married upward.
Dominic never corrected them.
Vivienne had let it pass because she did not want her marriage built on power.
But her silence had not made them kind.
It had made them careless.
The older man did not rush.
He walked into the ballroom with controlled steps, eyes first on Vivienne’s torn gown, then on her hand over her stomach, then on the scattered belongings at her feet.
His expression did not change.
That was somehow more frightening.
The security director bent slightly and picked up nothing.
He only looked at the black access card on the floor.
The attorneys stopped several steps behind him.
Folders sealed.
Faces calm.
The ring remained missing.

But Chloe’s confidence was gone.
