Chapter 5

Vivienne did not scream.

That surprised everyone.

Especially Eleanor.

The old Vivienne might have begged.

Explained.

Cried harder.

Said, Please, I didn’t do this.

But something changed when Dominic told her to submit.

It was not anger first.

It was clarity.

The kind that comes when the last person you hoped would protect you becomes another locked door.

Vivienne looked down at her wedding ring.

A delicate band Dominic had chosen because “my family likes understated women.”

At the time, she thought that was sweet.

Now she heard the truth inside it.

Understated.

Quiet.

Manageable.

She slid the ring off her swollen finger slowly.

Dominic noticed.

His face tightened.

“Vivienne.”

She closed the ring inside her palm.

Chloe laughed, sharp and delighted.

“Oh, now she’s dramatic.”

Eleanor released the torn fabric as if Vivienne were suddenly beneath touching.

“You are embarrassing yourself.”

Vivienne held the dress closed with one hand and lifted her phone with the other.

Her thumb found the number she had almost called before entering the ballroom.

Dad.

She had not wanted to involve him.

Not tonight.

Not at someone else’s wedding.

Not while pregnant and emotional and already accused.

But her father had told her one thing before she married Dominic.

“When people test how far they can humiliate you, call me before they reach the point of no return.”

Vivienne had waited too long.

Now she pressed call.

When he answered, she did not explain.

She simply wiped one tear from her cheek and said:

“Dad… it’s time.”
