Chapter 8

Chloe’s voice rose again, but the sound had lost its power.

“She was jealous,” Chloe said. “Everyone knows it.”

Vivienne looked at her.

“Jealous of what?”

The question was quiet.

Chloe faltered.

“The wedding. The attention. The ring.”

Vivienne looked around the ballroom.

At the flowers.

The chandeliers.

The guests avoiding her eyes.

The husband who had not stepped between her and humiliation.

Then back at Chloe.

“You can keep all of it.”

The simplicity of that sentence unsettled Chloe more than denial.

Eleanor snapped, “Do not speak to the bride that way.”

Vivienne’s father turned his eyes toward Eleanor.

“Do not speak to my daughter at all.”

Eleanor’s mouth closed.

The security director said something quietly into a radio, but no footage appeared. No announcement followed. No one was arrested. No ring was found.

Only the room tightening around a truth not yet spoken.

Dominic finally stepped toward Vivienne.

“Vivienne, let’s not make this worse.”

She looked at him.

“You already did.”

His face twisted.

“My sister is upset.”

“I am eight months pregnant.”

“I know.”

“No,” she said. “You watched.”

The words landed harder than shouting.

Dominic glanced toward his mother.

That glance answered every question Vivienne had left.

Even now, he was still checking where loyalty was permitted.

Vivienne opened her palm and looked at her wedding ring.

Then closed it again.

Not because she was unsure.
