Chapter 9

The attorneys did not open the sealed folders.

That made everyone more nervous.

A revealed paper can be argued with.

A sealed folder waits.

Vivienne’s father spoke quietly to one of them, then turned back to his daughter.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

He looked at her stomach.

“Vivienne.”

She swallowed.

“The baby moved. I’m okay.”

His jaw tightened.

But he did not make the moment worse by touching her without permission or ordering her away like she was fragile.

He simply stood close.

Protection, not control.

That difference mattered.

Chloe watched the exchange with resentment.

Eleanor watched with calculation.

Dominic watched with dread.

The security director finally crouched near the scattered belongings and gestured toward the black access card without picking it up.

“Is this yours, Mrs. Mercer?”

Vivienne nodded.

“Yes.”

Chloe scoffed.

“What does that have to do with my ring?”

No one answered.

No ownership was announced.

No final connection was revealed.

But Dominic’s face lost more color.

Eleanor saw it.

“Dominic?” she whispered.

He looked away.

Vivienne’s father followed that look.

The ballroom held its breath.

Still, the ring’s actual location remained unknown.

The security footage remained unseen.

The legal consequences remained unwritten.

All anyone had was behavior.

Chloe accusing too fast.

Eleanor tearing too eagerly.

Dominic staying too silent.
