Chapter 1

My Son-in-Law Forced My Shivering Daughter to Serve His Family—Then I Called the House’s Real Owner.
Maya Sterling stood at the kitchen sink with wet hair dripping onto her emerald-green top, her hands red from icy water, and a faint bruise circling one wrist.
The winter window behind her had been left open.
Cold air moved through the white marble kitchen while Ethan Cole’s family ate roast dinner beneath the chandelier as if she were invisible.
Then Ethan snatched a plate from his mother Beatrice and thrust it toward Maya.
“Forget the dishes. Bring more food!”
Maya’s numb fingers failed her.
The plate slipped, hit the floor, and shattered into large ceramic pieces.
She flinched so violently that her injured wrist flew to her chest.
Victoria Sterling stepped forward.
Not fast.
Not frantic.
Certain.
She moved between Ethan and Maya, turned off the icy faucet, closed the open window, and placed her coat over her daughter’s wet shoulders.
“Maya, step away from that sink.”
Maya hesitated.
Then moved behind her mother.
Beatrice rose from the dining table, pearl necklace shining against her cream blouse.
“This is my son’s house.”
Ethan folded his arms, trying to look dangerous.
Victoria unlocked her phone without looking away from him.
“No. I bought it for my daughter.”
Ethan’s face changed instantly.
Beatrice looked toward him, confused.
Maya stared at her mother like she had just heard the first warm thing in the room.
A woman’s professional voice came through the phone.
“The emergency property order is ready.”
The doorbell rang from the adjoining foyer.
Through the window, a dark sedan waited outside.
Victoria picked up the phone before Ethan could reach it.
