Chapter 7

Maya wanted to speak.
Her throat would not cooperate.
There were too many years of training inside her silence.
Don’t embarrass Ethan.
Don’t upset Beatrice.
Don’t make guests uncomfortable.
Don’t be dramatic.
Don’t make your mother worry.
But Victoria’s coat was warm around her shoulders, and her mother’s body stood between her and Ethan like a door finally locked from the right side.
So Maya found one sentence.
“He opened the window.”
Everyone looked at her.
Ethan’s eyes hardened.
Maya trembled but continued.
“He said I was too slow. He opened it so I’d hurry.”
Beatrice inhaled sharply.
Not from guilt.
From anger that Maya had spoken in front of witnesses.
Ethan pointed toward her.
“That is not what happened.”
Maya flinched.
Victoria stepped slightly forward.
“Do not point at her.”
Ethan lowered his hand slowly.
Maya touched the bruise around her wrist.
“He grabbed me when I dropped the serving spoon.”
A dinner guest stood.
Chelsea, one of Beatrice’s friends, whispered, “Ethan…”
He turned on her.
“Sit down.”
She did not.
That was another small shift.
Tiny.
But real.
Once one witness stopped obeying, the room changed.
Victoria kept her eyes on Ethan.
“You built authority out of everyone’s silence.”
Ethan’s mouth tightened.
Victoria continued, “That ends tonight.”
The attorney remained on the phone, silent but present.
Outside, the dark sedan waited.
The identities of the figures at the door remained unrevealed.

But Ethan’s fear showed he already understood they were not dinner guests.
