Chapter 5

Ethan’s first reaction was anger.

His second was calculation.

Victoria saw both.

Anger tightened his jaw.

Calculation moved his eyes.

To the phone.

The broken plate.

The dining-room guests.

The foyer.

The front door.

He was not thinking about Maya’s wet hair.

Not her red hands.

Not the bruise on her wrist.

He was thinking about control.

“What do you mean, you bought it?” he asked.

Victoria’s expression did not change.

“What I said.”

Beatrice turned toward Ethan.

“Ethan?”

He ignored her.

“Maya is my wife. This is our marital home.”

Victoria looked at Maya.

Maya’s eyes were wide, still confused by the truth unfolding in front of her.

Victoria softened only for her daughter.

“It was always meant to be your safe place.”

Maya’s lips parted.

Safe place.

The phrase nearly broke her.

This house had become the opposite.

Ethan took one step forward.

Victoria picked up the phone before he could reach it.

“Do not touch this call.”

His hand stopped midair.

That small hesitation told everyone at the dining table that Ethan was not certain anymore.

The chandelier glowed warmly above the room.

Outside, pale winter daylight pressed against the windows.

Inside, Ethan’s confidence began slipping across the marble like water from the shattered plate.

Then the attorney’s voice spoke again from the phone.

“The emergency property order is ready.”

Beatrice went still.

Ethan looked toward the foyer.
