Chapter 4

Beatrice Cole believed elegance could disguise cruelty.
She wore cream, pearls, and soft perfume while speaking like a blade.
“Maya, dear, your hands are always so clumsy.”
“Maya, dear, Ethan works too hard to come home to mistakes.”
“Maya, dear, some women simply are not raised for a home like this.”
Victoria had heard enough versions of that tone in boardrooms, charity committees, and old family circles to recognize it instantly.
The cruelty was not accidental.
It was cultivated.
When Victoria stepped between Maya and Ethan, Beatrice rose slowly from the dining table, plate still in hand.
“This is my son’s house.”
The sentence was meant to end the matter.
Victoria looked at her.
Then at Ethan.
Then at the kitchen Ethan had used like a throne room.
White cabinetry.
Marble counters.
Crystal chandelier.
A dining table filled with food Maya had cooked but not eaten.
Victoria remembered signing the purchase authorization.
Remembered insisting the property be structured for Maya’s protection.
Remembered Ethan smiling too widely when he thought marriage would eventually make everything his.
He had not asked enough questions.
Men like Ethan rarely did when money arrived dressed as generosity.
Victoria took out her phone.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“Who are you calling?”
Victoria did not answer him.
She placed the call, put it on speaker, and set the phone beside a framed photograph on the counter.
Then she said calmly, “No. I bought it for my daughter.”
Beatrice’s mouth opened.

For once, no polished insult came out.
