Chapter 6

The doorbell changed the air.
No one moved at first.
Maya clutched Victoria’s coat around her shoulders, still shivering.
Ethan stared toward the foyer as if the sound itself had insulted him.
Beatrice set her plate down slowly.
One of the dinner guests lowered a wineglass.
Another looked toward the broken ceramic on the floor and then toward Maya’s red hands.
The room was finally seeing what had been happening in plain sight.
Ethan forced a laugh.
“Is this supposed to scare me?”
Victoria answered, “No.”
That unsettled him more.
She was not performing.
Not threatening for effect.
Not trying to win an argument.
She was proceeding.
Ethan hated proceeding.
Proceeding meant steps already existed before he noticed them.
Calls made.
Papers prepared.
People outside.
A structure he could not shout into changing.
Beatrice straightened her shoulders.
“Whatever this is, it can wait until after dinner.”
Victoria turned toward her.
“No.”
The word was quiet.
Absolute.
Maya had never heard anyone say no to Beatrice like that.
Not Ethan.
Not his relatives.
Not the staff he hired and dismissed without apology.
Victoria looked back at Maya.
“Shoes?”
Maya blinked.
“What?”
“Are your shoes nearby?”
Maya nodded toward the mudroom.
Ethan snapped, “She’s not leaving.”
The entire kitchen went silent.
Victoria turned slowly.
“She is not staying here wet, injured, and afraid because you say so.”
Ethan’s face flushed.
The doorbell rang again.

This time, nobody pretended it was ordinary.
