Chapter 13 - The power-of-attorney packet

Hearthstone had recommended every prospective resident review:
Healthcare directives.
Financial power of attorney.
Estate plan.
Standard.
Carla downloaded a packet.
Printed it.
Placed Louis’s name in a draft as proposed financial agent.
I found it in the home-office drawer.
Unsigned.
No forged signature.
That mattered.
I held the pages and felt rage anyway.
Louis said:
“I never saw those.”
Carla said:
“I was preparing.”
“For what?”
“In case you needed help.”
“Did I ask?”
“No.”
“Then why fill in his name?”
“Because he’s your son.”
That sentence.
As though biology equals authority.
I asked:
“Did you plan to ask me to sign?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“After we talked about Meadowbrook.”
“And if I said no?”
Carla stared.
Then:
“You always say no first.”
That was the closest she came to revealing the mindset.
