Chapter 23 - My estate plan
The conflict forced me to update my estate documents.
Not to disinherit Louis dramatically.
I considered it.
Angry people love permanent documents.
Dan advised patience.
“Do you want your seventy-year-old anger controlling your eighty-year-old estate?”
Annoying man.
I created a revocable trust for the house to simplify administration if I became incapacitated later.
Independent successor trustee first.
June as backup.
Not Louis.
Not because he was permanently untrustworthy.
Because separating caregiving from immediate property control seemed wise.
My healthcare power went to June initially.
Louis as secondary after two years if our relationship stabilized.
My will still left most of my estate to Louis.
With a provision that any unpaid family debt at death would be offset.
No revenge charity taking everything.
No surprise video reading.
Just planning.
Then I told Louis what I had done.
Not every amount.
Enough.
He looked hurt.
“You don’t trust me.”
“Not with everything yet.”
