Chapter 25 - My seventy-first birthday

No giant party.
My choice.
June.
Jason.
Two friends.
Louis and Carla.
Cake.
No floral tablecloth.
No red cups.
I sat at the head of the table.
Not because I needed symbolic restoration.
Because it was my seat.
Louis arrived holding a paper grocery bag.
I narrowed my eyes.
“Should I be worried?”
He put it down.
Inside:
A stainless-steel dog bowl.
Brand new.
I stared.
Carla looked horrified.
“Louis.”
He raised both hands.
“Wait.”
The bowl was empty.
Engraved:
ERNEST — NOT FOR KIBBLE
I tried not to laugh.
Failed.
Then Louis said:
“Too soon?”
“Yes.”
“Return it?”
“No.”
I used it later for screws in the garage.
