part 4

PART 4
The letter arrived on a Tuesday.
Thick paper.
Private courier.
Harrison family seal.
Emma knew before opening it that nothing good could come with that much money in the envelope.
Her attorney, Grace Holloway, read it first.
Then she read it again.
Then she said, “He is panicking.”
Emma’s stomach tightened.
“What did he do?”
Grace placed the papers on the kitchen table.
Victor had petitioned to restructure the Harrison succession trust before Ethan’s wedding.
The new marriage would produce “legitimate future heirs.”
Any unknown or undisclosed biological claims would be barred unless presented before the marriage ceremony.
The language was elegant.
The intent was brutal.
If Ethan married Vanessa Whitmore the following Saturday, Victor could argue Emma’s children had no claim to the Harrison trust and no standing to challenge prior concealment.
Emma stood in the kitchen while four backpacks hung by the door and four lunch boxes waited on the counter.
Noah was coloring at the table.
Lily was teaching Ava how to braid a ribbon.
Caleb was asleep on the couch with one shoe missing.
Emma looked at them and felt six years of fear turn into decision.
Grace said, “We can file quietly.”
Emma shook her head.
“Victor built this in public.”
“He can watch it collapse in public.”
Grace looked at her for a long moment.
“The wedding?”
Emma nodded.
“The wedding.”
Grace did not smile.
But her eyes sharpened.
“Then we go with proof.”
DNA results.
The signed agreement.
The trust records.
The forged note analysis.
The blocked correspondence.
The investigator’s reports.
The medical records from the quadruplets’ birth.
And one video Emma had never shown anyone.
Victor in her apartment.
Voice clear.
Face visible.
Saying, “If you refuse, I will take them from you.”
Grace watched the footage once and closed the laptop gently.
“You should have shown me this sooner.”
Emma looked toward the children.
“I was scared.”
Grace’s voice softened.
“You still are.”
“Yes.”
Emma turned back.
“But now I’m angrier than I am scared.”
That night, Emma told the children they were going on a trip.
Noah asked if it was Disneyland.
Emma almost cried.
“No, baby.”
May you like
“We’re going to meet someone who should have met you a long time ago.”
