PART 8

The wedding became a legal emergency before the cake was cut.

Guests were escorted out.

Reporters gathered outside within twenty minutes.

The bride’s family withdrew from the marriage agreement by sunset.

Victor’s lawyers arrived before the police did.

That was typical.

Ethan did not care.

He sat in a private waiting room behind the ballroom with Emma and the four children.

For several minutes, no one knew what to say.

Noah played with his cuff button.

Lily watched Ethan without blinking.

Ava leaned against Emma.

Caleb fell asleep sitting upright.

Ethan stared at them like looking away might make time steal them again.

Emma finally spoke.

“I did not come to hurt Vanessa.”

“I know.”

“I did not come for money.”

“I know that now.”

Her eyes filled.

“You did not know because you trusted him.”

Ethan flinched.

“I trusted him more than I trusted the part of me that knew you.”

Emma looked down.

“I signed.”

“I left.”

“I thought that made me guilty forever.”

Ethan’s voice broke.

“You were threatened.”

“I was still gone.”

The room went quiet.

There were truths neither of them could soften.

Then Lily walked toward Ethan.

She held out a small bracelet made of pink beads.

“Mom said if we met our dad, we should be polite.”

Ethan took the bracelet with trembling fingers.

“Thank you.”

“Do you have a house?”

He almost laughed.

“Yes.”

“Is it scary?”

He looked at Emma before answering.

“It used to be.”

“But I think I need a new one.”

Ava spoke from Emma’s side.

“Mom says safe houses have snacks.”

Ethan nodded seriously.

“Then mine needs work.”

For the first time, Emma almost smiled.

The door opened.

Grace stepped in.

“Temporary custody protection has been filed.”

“Victor is barred from contact pending hearing.”

Ethan looked up.

“I want to support them.”

Emma’s expression guarded itself instantly.

Grace noticed.

“Support can be arranged without control.”

Ethan nodded.

“Good.”

He looked at Emma.

“I’m not my father.”

Emma held his gaze.

“I need time to believe that.”

Ethan swallowed.

“You can have it.”

From outside, Victor’s voice rose in the hallway.

“You will all regret this.”

Noah moved closer to Emma.

Ethan stood.
