PART 5

Ethan did not want the wedding.

That was the part nobody in the ballroom knew.

He liked Vanessa.

She was kind.

Educated.

Beautiful in the way society pages loved.

But she was not Emma.

Nobody was.

Victor called the marriage practical.

The board called it stabilizing.

Vanessa’s father called it a merger of families.

Ethan called it surrender, but only in his head.

For six years, Emma had haunted him.

Not as an angel.

Not as a villain.

As a question.

Why did she take the money?

Why did she leave without speaking to him?

Why did the woman who once slept in his shirts and laughed at his terrible pancakes vanish for a check?

Victor’s answer never changed.

“She chose herself.”

“She was always going to.”

Ethan tried to hate her.

Some days he succeeded for almost an hour.

Then he would remember the way she looked at sick children during hospital tours.

The way she cried during bad movies.

The way she once returned a diamond necklace because she said love should not feel like a contract.

That woman did not fit the story Victor gave him.

But Victor controlled every door.

Every address went nowhere.

Every investigator hit a wall.

Every lawyer told Ethan the agreement was signed voluntarily.

Eventually grief became exhaustion.

Exhaustion became obedience.

And obedience brought him to the altar.

Then Emma entered.

With four children.

His children.

Ethan knew before she said it.

He saw it in Noah’s dimple.

In Lily’s serious eyes.

In Ava’s stubborn chin.

In Caleb’s nervous smile.

Parts of himself standing in the aisle, holding the hands of the woman he had spent six years trying to stop loving.

Victor said, “Get them out of here.”

That was when Ethan finally heard his father clearly.

Not as a grieving son.

Not as an obedient heir.

As a man listening to a criminal try to remove witnesses.

Ethan stepped away from Vanessa.

Vanessa whispered, “Ethan?”

He could not look at her yet.

“I’m sorry.”

Then he walked down the aisle.

Slowly.

Like one wrong move might make the children disappear.

Noah looked up at him.

“Are you our dad?”

Ethan knelt in the middle of the ballroom.

His eyes were full of tears.

“I think I should have been.”

Emma’s face cracked for the first time.

Victor shouted, “Enough.”

Ethan turned.

“No.”

“For the first time in my life, Father…”

May you like

“Enough from you.”
