Chapter 3 - Amber and the Photographs

Amber had not slapped anyone.

That was the defense forming behind her eyes.

Mr. Vale saw it before she spoke.

She stood beside the black garbage bag with a photograph still in her hand, already preparing to become smaller in the story.

The supportive wife.

The confused daughter-in-law.

The woman who thought they were only packing.

The woman who did not know Liam would strike his father.

But the camera had seen her hands.

The camera had heard her voice.

Throw the photographs away. He won’t need memories.

Mr. Vale looked at the framed photo she held.

It showed Liam as a young man standing beside his late mother on the penthouse balcony. His mother had been smiling at the skyline, one hand on Liam’s shoulder.

Amber glanced down and realized which photograph it was.

For the first time, shame touched her face.

Not enough.

But enough to show she recognized the cruelty had a shape.

Evelyn’s eyes moved to the garbage bags.

“Please do not touch anything else.”

Amber dropped the frame onto the table.

The glass cracked.

The sound made Liam flinch.

Mr. Vale did not move.

He had already watched worse things break.

Amber lifted both hands slightly.

“I was just helping clear space.”

One investigator looked at the filled garbage bags.

Evelyn did not respond immediately.

Silence made Amber keep talking.

“He asked us to organize his things.”

Liam shot her a warning look.

Too late.

Evelyn turned toward Mr. Vale.

“Did you ask them to remove your family photographs?”

Mr. Vale’s lips parted.

His voice was rough, but clear.

“No.”

One word.

Liam’s jaw tightened.

“Dad, don’t start.”

Evelyn’s eyes sharpened.

“Do not instruct him.”

Liam looked at her with fury, then remembered the phone.

The camera.

The committee.

The investigators.

His fury trapped itself behind his teeth.

Amber whispered, “Liam…”

He snapped his head toward her.

“Stop talking.”

The room heard that too.

The investigators heard.

Evelyn heard.

Mr. Vale’s glasses saw.

Amber lowered her eyes.

The penthouse was full of beautiful furniture, expensive art, and a skyline worth millions.

But at that moment, the most powerful object in the room was a pair of glasses on a bruised old man’s face.
