Chapter 4 - The Wheelchair Handles
Liam’s hands remained on the wheelchair handles.
He had not realized it.
Mr. Vale had.
The grip said more than Liam’s words.
Ownership.
Control.
Removal.
You’re going to Ohio.
This penthouse is ours now.
The wheelchair had become Liam’s weapon before the slap.
Not violent in the obvious way.
Worse.
Administrative.
He had planned to roll his father out of the penthouse as if moving furniture from a room he wanted redesigned.
Evelyn looked at his hands.
Liam finally noticed and released the handles.
The movement was fast.
Guilty.
An investigator made a note inside a folder without showing the page.
Liam saw the pen move.
His expression tightened.
“What exactly do you think you’re documenting?”
Evelyn answered evenly.
“What you are still doing.”
His eyes flashed.
“I let go.”
“After you noticed us watching.”
Mr. Vale almost closed his eyes.
Not from weakness.
From the terrible satisfaction of precision.
Evelyn had always been precise.
That was why he had trusted her with the activation protocol.
Not the trust.
Not the inheritance amendment.
Not ownership.
Those remained unspoken.
But the protocol was simple.
Two blinks.
One encrypted stream.
Twelve senior partners.
One chairwoman.
No opportunity for Liam to explain the scene before it was seen.
Liam pointed toward his father.
“He’s manipulating all of you. Look at him. He can barely sit upright.”
Mr. Vale looked at his son.
The words hurt less than expected.
Perhaps because Liam had said worse when no one was listening.
Perhaps because now someone was.
Evelyn stepped closer to Mr. Vale.
“Mr. Vale, did you consent to be relocated to Ohio today?”
Liam snapped, “He doesn’t understand the question.”
Mr. Vale answered before Evelyn could respond.
“I understand it.”
The room stopped.
His voice was not strong.
It did not need to be.
“No.”
Amber’s face went pale.
Liam swallowed.
Evelyn turned toward him.
“You stated this penthouse was yours now.”
Liam’s mouth opened.
No good answer came.

Because arrogance always sounds clearer when it thinks no one important hears it.
