Chapter 9 - The Bags of Memory

One investigator opened the top of a black garbage bag.
Only slightly.
Enough to see framed photographs stacked face down inside.
He did not remove them.
He did not display them.
He only looked.
Then closed the bag again.
Mr. Vale watched carefully.
Those photographs mattered.
Not financially.
Not legally in the way Liam cared about law.
They mattered because erasure begins with objects people call clutter.
A wedding portrait.
A family vacation.
A child’s first day at school.
A wife laughing beside a skyline window.
A father and son before power learned how to rot affection.
Amber had stuffed them into garbage bags because memories made the penthouse look occupied by someone other than her future.
Liam had allowed it because grief was inconvenient to ownership.
Mr. Vale’s hands tightened slightly on the wheelchair arms.
Evelyn noticed.
“Would you like those items secured?”
Mr. Vale nodded.
“Yes.”
Amber’s face flushed.
“They were just photographs.”
Mr. Vale looked at her.
“They were mine.”
The words were quiet.
No one corrected him.
Not this time.
Liam’s eyes darted between Evelyn and the investigators.
“What do you think this changes?”
No one answered.
That was the tension.
Everything had changed.
Nothing final had been revealed.
No ownership decision.
No inheritance amendment.
No professional consequence.
No arrest.
Only the moment before those things could begin.
Liam hated that suspended space.
He needed a verdict so he could fight it.
Instead, he had witnesses.
Evidence.
Silence.
His father sitting still, glasses reflecting light, more powerful in restraint than Liam had been in violence.
The phone in Liam’s hand crackled slightly.
A distant voice, one of the partners, spoke just enough to be heard.
“Evelyn, continue securing the scene.”
Liam’s face went gray.
The committee was still there.
Not past tense.
Present.
Amber stepped back from the bags as if they might burn her.
Mr. Vale looked toward the skyline.
For one breath, grief crossed his face.
May you like
Then he returned his eyes to his son.
