Chapter 8 - The Partnership Committee

The partnership committee was not physically in the penthouse.
That almost made it worse.
They existed through the open phone line, through the transmitted stream, through Evelyn’s voice, through Liam’s imagination.
Twelve senior partners.
Men and women who had trusted his judgment.
Reviewed his cases.
Approved his rise.
Let him speak in conference rooms about fiduciary responsibility, elder advocacy, ethical structure, and family estate protection.
They had just watched him slap his father.
They had heard him say, “This penthouse is ours now.”
They had heard Amber say memories should be thrown away.
They had watched a vulnerable man in a wheelchair activate the only protection left to him.
Liam stared at the phone.
“Who exactly saw this?”
Evelyn answered.
“The partnership committee witnessed everything.”
“You said that already.”
“And it remains true.”
His face twisted.
“Were they recording?”
Evelyn did not answer directly.
The unanswered question did more damage than a yes.
Liam looked toward the investigators.
“You have no right to enter this residence.”
Mr. Vale spoke.
“I invited them.”
Liam spun toward him.
“You don’t make those decisions anymore.”
The sentence fell into the penthouse like a dropped knife.
Amber closed her eyes.
Evelyn’s face hardened.
The investigators stopped moving.
Mr. Vale looked at his son with a sadness so controlled it almost looked like peace.
“Thank you,” he said.
Liam blinked.
“For what?”
“For saying it clearly.”
Liam understood too late.
The glasses had seen.
The phone line had heard.
The committee was still present.
He had just admitted the belief behind the act.
Not that his father needed help.
Not that relocation was medical.
Not that photographs were being organized.
That his father no longer had decisions.
Evelyn stepped toward the marble table.
“That will be included in the record.”
Liam’s breath caught.
Amber whispered, “Stop talking.”
For once, she was right.
But Liam had already done what arrogant men do when frightened.

He had explained himself.
