Chapter 1 - THE ULTRASOUND THAT WENT DARK

Dr. Evelyn Reed moved the ultrasound probe slowly across Anna Mercer’s seven-month-pregnant belly.
The examination room was bright, quiet, and unnervingly clean. Morning sunlight passed through the frosted windows, touching the edge of the ultrasound machine and the sealed cabinets along the wall.
Anna had chosen the private clinic because Aaron refused to accompany her.
He called the appointment unnecessary.
He said switching doctors during the third trimester could endanger the baby.
That warning was precisely why Anna came.
For months, she had experienced sudden dizziness, numbness, unexplained contractions, and periods when she could barely remember entire evenings. Aaron always had an explanation.
Pregnancy exhaustion.
Anxiety.
Hormonal instability.
He also had a treatment.
Small injections he administered in her thigh.
Herbal drinks prepared by his mother, Sylvia, and served in the same polished silver cup.
The remedies never made Anna feel better.
They made her quiet.
Dr. Reed paused.
Her hand stopped moving.
Anna looked toward the ultrasound screen, expecting to see the baby’s profile.
The image showed the curve of the skull, a moving hand, and the steady flicker of a heartbeat.
Then Dr. Reed shifted the probe lower.
Something narrow and angular appeared near the outer wall of the uterus.
Dr. Reed’s expression changed.
She adjusted the angle.
The object remained.
It was too regular to be scar tissue.
Too reflective to be natural.
Dr. Reed immediately switched off the monitor.
Anna gripped the edge of the examination table.
“Is my baby all right?”
“The heartbeat is present,” Dr. Reed said carefully.
“That isn’t what I asked.”
The doctor pulled a rolling stool closer.
“Anna, have you undergone any surgical procedure during this pregnancy?”
“No.”
“Any implanted monitoring device?”
“No.”
“Any experimental treatment?”
Anna shook her head.
Dr. Reed opened a drawer and removed an emergency imaging consent form.
“There is something inside you that should not be there.”
Anna’s phone began vibrating beside her handbag.
Aaron.
The call ended.
It started again immediately.
Dr. Reed placed the form and a pen in Anna’s shaking hands.
“I need permission to perform advanced imaging and emergency blood work.”
“What did you see?”
“I saw a foreign object positioned between your abdominal wall and the outer surface of your uterus. I cannot determine what it is from this scan alone.”
Anna looked down at her belly.
The baby moved beneath her palm.
She signed.
The nurse entered and quickly collected blood and urine samples. Each tube was sealed, labeled, and placed inside a locked medical container.
Dr. Reed watched the clinic entrance through the security monitor.
“Has anyone given you injections recently?”
“My husband.”
“What did he say they were?”
“Vitamins and hormones.”
“Did you see a prescription?”
“No.”
“What about drinks or supplements?”
“His mother brings herbal drinks every morning.”
The clinic doorbell began ringing violently.
On the security monitor, Aaron stood outside the locked glass entrance, pounding one fist against the door.
Sylvia stood beside him.
She held the familiar silver cup.
“Anna!” Aaron shouted. “Open the door!”
Anna recoiled on the examination table.
“How did he know I was here?”
Her appointment had been made from a phone Aaron did not know she owned.
Dr. Reed stepped between Anna and the entrance.
“Do not let them inside,” she told the nurse.
The nurse enlarged the security image.
Sylvia tilted the silver cup as she argued with Aaron. A thin residue clung to the rim.
Dr. Reed leaned toward the monitor.
The color left her face.
“What is it?” Anna whispered.
Dr. Reed did not answer.
She reached for the clinic’s emergency alarm instead.
Outside, Aaron struck the glass again.
Then he held up his phone.

On its screen was a photograph of Anna sitting in the examination room—taken only seconds earlier from somewhere inside the clinic.
👉 Aaron had tracked Anna to the clinic, but the photograph on his phone suggested someone had been watching her from inside the locked building.
