Chapter 6 - THE ROOM SYLVIA PREPARED
Police searched the Mercer lake property after finding it named in the medical invoices.
The main bedroom had been converted into a private recovery suite.
A hospital bed stood beside locked cabinets.
Window handles had been removed.
The interior door locked from the hallway.
There was no telephone.
No computer.
No way for Anna to contact anyone without permission.
The nursery across the hall was complete.
Yellow walls.
White furniture.
Monogrammed blankets.
The initials embroidered on them were not A.M., for Anna Mercer.
They were S.M.
Sylvia Mercer.
“She planned to present herself as the child’s primary caregiver,” Mara explained.
Anna looked at the photographs from her hospital bed.
Sylvia had selected the crib, clothes, and birth announcements.
One announcement read:
Aaron and Sylvia Mercer welcome the next generation.
Anna’s name did not appear.
The wording could have been dismissed as a printer’s mistake if the rest of the room had not existed.
Inside a locked filing cabinet, police found behavioral reports describing Anna as detached from her pregnancy and resentful of motherhood.
Sylvia wrote most of them.
Aaron’s preferred obstetrician signed the summaries without documenting direct examinations.
The same reports supported the emergency incapacity petition.
Anna had been excited about the baby.
But Aaron repeatedly told others she was afraid, unstable, and emotionally disconnected.
Whenever she decorated a nursery, Sylvia changed it.
Whenever she selected a name, Aaron rejected it.
Whenever she discussed the future, they reminded her how weak she had become.
They were not merely preparing to control her money.
They were erasing her role as mother.
Grace found another file at the lake house.
It contained an application for temporary guardianship of the unborn child. The petition claimed Anna might harm the baby during a psychiatric episode.
Aaron would become sole legal guardian at birth.
Sylvia would provide full-time care.
If Anna resisted, her resistance would support the allegation.
“How could a court believe that?” Anna asked.
“Because they prepared medical records, witness statements, and evidence of repeated collapse,” Grace answered.
“The collapse they caused.”
“Yes.”
The capsule created symptoms.
The records renamed those symptoms.
The guardianship petition turned them into a legal weapon.
Mara questioned Sylvia again.
This time, Aaron’s attorney was not present.
Sylvia admitted preparing the lake room but described it as compassionate planning.
“Anna needed supervision.”
“Why remove the window handles?”
“She wandered at night.”
“Who documented that?”
“My son.”
“Why was the bedroom door designed to lock from outside?”
“For medical safety.”
“Why did the birth announcements exclude Anna?”
Sylvia’s face tightened.
“They were drafts.”
“Why did you handle the implant?”
“I opened a package for Aaron.”
“Did you know what it contained?”
“He said it was a monitoring device.”
“Why was its coating found on the cup used to drug Anna?”
Sylvia looked away.
Mara placed the life insurance policy on the table.
“Did you know your son would receive five million dollars if Anna died?”
“No.”
“Did you know the baby was a girl?”
Sylvia’s eyes moved back to Mara.
“What does that matter?”
“You told Anna the testing was inconclusive.”
“Aaron wanted a son.”
“Did his plan change when he learned it was a daughter?”
Sylvia requested her attorney.
The question remained unanswered.
At the hospital, the nurse brought Anna a sealed bag recovered from the lake-house nursery.
Inside was a small bracelet engraved with a name.
Clara.
Anna had suggested Clara months earlier.
Aaron dismissed it immediately.
He said the name belonged to someone who had betrayed the Mercer family.
Yet Sylvia had already engraved it on the bracelet.
Beneath the bracelet was a handwritten note:
If Anna survives, never tell Clara what her mother did.
Anna’s hands began shaking.
“What did they plan to tell my daughter?”
Grace turned the note over.
On the reverse side was a rehearsed statement:
May you like
Anna attempted to end the pregnancy during a psychiatric crisis. Aaron saved the child.
