Chapter 8 - THE ARGUMENT BETWEEN MOTHER AND SON
Once confronted with the device log, Sylvia changed her statement.
She claimed Aaron installed the control application on her phone without explaining its purpose.
“He told me to press the button if Anna became hysterical.”
“What happened when you pressed it?” Mara asked.
“She became sleepy.”
“And you continued?”
“I believed she needed rest.”
“You watched a pregnant woman collapse after using your phone.”
“She was always collapsing.”
“Because you and Aaron were drugging her.”
Sylvia began crying.
She described Aaron as ambitious, controlling, and desperate to save his company. She insisted the lake-house room had been his idea.
Mara placed the nursery photographs before her.
Sylvia had purchased every item.
Her handwriting covered the guardianship reports.
Her cup carried the sedative.
Her phone activated the capsule.
“You were not a frightened mother following her son,” Mara said. “You were building the life you expected to have after Anna disappeared.”
Sylvia stopped crying.
“I raised Aaron alone. I gave up everything.”
“That did not make Anna’s body repayment.”
“Aaron promised the baby would restore this family.”
“The baby is not family property.”
Sylvia requested the interview end.
Aaron also changed his defense.
He claimed Sylvia convinced him Anna was unstable and needed controlled medication.
He admitted purchasing the capsule but said he believed the doses were safe.
The release log contradicted him.
Several commands exceeded recommended limits for any approved use.
One was issued after he searched:
How low can pregnant blood pressure fall before unconsciousness?
Another search asked:
Can premature labor invalidate a trust signature?
Aaron’s attorney argued that search history did not prove intent.
The dosing notebook, forged documents, and life insurance policy did.
Grace prepared a civil action to recover every dollar Aaron transferred from Anna’s household accounts. His healthcare company entered bankruptcy.
Lenders seized his offices.
Employees learned that their expansion funds came from fraudulent invoices tied to Anna’s pregnancy.
Aaron’s professional image collapsed faster than his legal defense.
He requested a recorded call with Anna.
Grace advised against it.
Anna agreed only with Mara listening.
Aaron appeared on a detention-center screen.
He looked thinner.
“Anna, Sylvia manipulated both of us.”
“You implanted a drug reservoir inside me.”
“I thought it would stabilize you.”
“You triggered it when I refused to sign.”
“You were panicking.”
“I was disagreeing with you.”
“You don’t remember how bad you became.”
“I remember more clearly now that the drugs are gone.”
Aaron’s eyes hardened.
“You think that doctor saved you. She frightened you into surgery.”
“The capsule contained enough medication to stop my heart.”
“Not if used correctly.”
The admission entered the recording.
Aaron realized too late.
Anna leaned closer.
“What was correct use?”
He remained silent.
“How many times was I supposed to faint before you controlled my trust?”
“I wanted to protect what we built.”
“You built debt.”
“I built our future.”
“You built a locked room.”
“That was my mother.”
“You signed the guardianship petition.”
Aaron’s face shifted.
“You found that?”
“Yes.”
He looked away.
Anna asked the question that had followed her since the nursery photographs.
“Why did you want the baby born early?”
Aaron answered with another question.
“Has Reed told you the baby is definitely yours?”
Anna’s entire body went still.
Grace ended the call immediately.
Aaron’s final sentence could have been another attempt to destabilize her.
But Mara checked the seized records.
Aaron had accessed Anna’s fertility-clinic file repeatedly during the first month of pregnancy.
Anna had conceived after a single assisted-reproduction procedure arranged by him.
She believed the embryo came from her egg and Aaron’s sperm.
