Chapter 1

My Sister Attacked Me While I Was Pregnant—Then My Family Tried to Hide the Evidence
Claire’s heel struck the side of the floral armchair a second before I fell.
That was the detail my mother later tried to erase.
She said Claire stumbled.
She said the teacup slipped.
She said pregnant women lose balance.
But I knew the truth because I saw my sister’s face when she did it.
Cold.
Focused.
Satisfied.
Hot tea splashed across my beige maternity dress.
The porcelain cup shattered on the hardwood beside me.
I hit the floor on one hand and curled my other arm around my belly before I even felt the pain.
Eight months pregnant.
On my parents’ living room floor.
With my sister standing over me in a red evening dress, still holding the matching floral saucer like we were at a garden party.
“Maybe now you’ll stay quiet,” Claire said.
For one second, nobody moved.
Not my father.
Not my mother.
Not the relatives still seated beneath the chandelier.
Then Ethan lunged across the room.
My husband dropped beside me and put his body between Claire and me so fast the floor shook under his knees.
“Get away from my wife!”
Claire stepped back only because Ethan’s arm forced her to.
My father moved next.
Not toward me.
Toward the front door.
He stood in front of it like a guard.
My mother rushed to the console table.
I thought she was reaching for my phone.
Then I realized she was taking Ethan’s.
She slid his black smartphone behind her lavender cardigan while making her voice soft and urgent.
“No police.”
“Claire made a mistake.”
Ethan turned toward her slowly.
His face changed from fear to disbelief.
I was shaking too hard to stand.
My dress clung wet against my body.
The baby moved once beneath my hand, and I nearly broke from relief.
But my family did not see that.
They were watching Claire.
Protecting Claire.
Saving Claire.
So I reached into my cardigan pocket with trembling fingers and pulled out my own phone.
The recording was still running.
I raised it just high enough for all of them to see.
“My phone recorded everything.”
Claire’s face emptied.
My mother stopped breathing.
My father’s hand fell from the door.
Ethan took the phone carefully from my hand, activated the emergency call, and looked at my parents.
His voice went dangerously calm.

“Then you all just confessed.”
