Chapter 6

At the hospital, everything became white light and machines.

The living room had been warm, floral, and elegant.

The hospital room was honest.

No chandelier.

No family portraits.

No polite tea.

Just monitors, nurses, questions, and Ethan’s hand wrapped around mine.

The baby’s heartbeat filled the room.

Fast.

Steady.

Alive.

That sound nearly broke me.

Ethan leaned forward with both hands over his face.

For the first time since the attack, he cried.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just one breath that finally could not hold everything.

I touched his wrist.

“We’re okay?”

The nurse smiled gently.

“Right now, baby looks strong.”

Right now.

Pregnancy teaches you to fear those two words and bless them at the same time.

A doctor examined me.

No graphic words.

No dramatic declarations.

Just careful medical attention.

Observation.

Stress response.

Bruising.

Monitoring.

Police statement after medical clearance.

Ethan repeated everything he remembered.

Claire’s position.

My father blocking the door.

My mother taking his phone.

The folder.

The inheritance documents.

That made the officer pause.

“What documents?”

Ethan looked at me.

I nodded.

“Estate transfer papers,” he said.

“They tried to make Hannah sign before the attack.”

The officer wrote that down.

By midnight, Detective Nora Hale arrived.

She was calm, middle-aged, and had the expression of someone who had heard families lie in expensive rooms before.

She asked if I knew why Claire attacked me.

I looked at Ethan.

Then back at her.

“My grandmother left me property.”

“My family wanted it changed.”

Detective Hale asked, “And you recorded the conversation because you expected violence?”

I swallowed.

“No.”

“I recorded because I expected manipulation.”

She nodded.

“Sometimes the difference is timing.”

That sentence stayed with me.

My mother called seventeen times before dawn.

My father called six.

Claire sent one text.

You’re really going to do this while pregnant?

I showed Detective Hale.

She photographed it.

Then Ethan blocked all three numbers.

Not because I asked.

May you like

Because I was too tired to remember I had the right.
