Chapter 4

After I showed them the recording, the living room changed.
Not because they were sorry.
Because they were caught.
Claire backed away from the broken teacup, her red dress brushing the floral chair.
My father kept staring at my phone like it was a weapon.
My mother slowly removed Ethan’s hidden phone from behind her cardigan.
Ethan saw it.
So did I.
Something in his face hardened beyond anger.
“You took my phone.”
My mother’s lips trembled.
“I was trying to calm everyone down.”
“You were hiding evidence.”
“No.”
Ethan looked at my father.
“Move away from the door.”
My father did not.
He said, “Ethan, think carefully.”
Wrong sentence.
Wrong man.
Ethan lifted my phone slightly.
“The call is connected.”
My father’s face changed.
A voice came through the speaker.
“911, what is your emergency?”
The room went silent.
Ethan answered without looking away from my parents.
“My pregnant wife was assaulted inside her parents’ home.”
“My mother-in-law took my phone.”
“My father-in-law is blocking the exit.”
“My sister-in-law is the attacker.”
Claire shouted, “That is not what happened!”
The operator asked if I was conscious.
I forced myself to speak.
“Yes.”
My voice shook.
“I’m pregnant.”
“I need medical help.”
That finally made my mother move.
Not toward me.
Toward Claire.
“Do not say another word,” she hissed.
Ethan heard that too.
He looked at her with something almost worse than fury.
Clarity.
My father stepped away from the door at last.
Not because he cared.
Because the operator had heard enough.
Ethan leaned down to me.
“Can I lift you?”
I nodded.
He slid one arm behind my shoulders and one beneath my knees.
My belly tightened with fear.
I held the phone against my chest.
Claire whispered, “You’re ruining my life.”
I looked at her.
For the first time, I did not feel like her older sister.
I felt like her witness.
“No, Claire.”
“You did that when you decided my baby was less important than your anger.”
The sirens began outside a minute later.
My mother started crying before the police entered.
For Claire.
May you like
Not for me.
