Chapter 5

The paramedics arrived with police.

My father suddenly became cooperative.

Too cooperative.

He moved furniture.

He opened the front door.

He said my name softly.

He called me sweetheart.

That was how I knew he was lying for an audience.

The officers separated everyone.

One stayed near Claire.

One spoke to my parents.

One followed the paramedics to me.

Ethan refused to leave my side.

The paramedic checked my pulse, my breathing, and the tightening pain across my abdomen.

“Any bleeding?”

“No.”

“Any dizziness?”

“Yes.”

“Baby moving?”

I placed a hand on my stomach.

“Some.”

Ethan closed his eyes in relief, but only for a second.

The officer asked what happened.

I gave him the phone.

“My recording is on there.”

My mother stepped forward.

“Hannah, please.”

Ethan turned.

“Do not speak to her.”

My father said, “This is a family misunderstanding.”

The officer looked at the shattered teacup, the spilled tea, my stained dress, and Claire standing pale beside the chair.

“Sir, I will decide what questions to ask.”

Claire suddenly began crying.

Not from guilt.

From strategy.

“She grabbed me first.”

Ethan’s head snapped toward her.

“She was on the floor.”

“She threatened me.”

My mother quickly added, “Hannah has been very emotional lately.”

There it was.

The line they had prepared.

Pregnant.

Emotional.

Unstable.

Unfit.

The officer looked at me.

I was still on the floor, one arm around my belly.

I almost laughed.

If I had been stronger, maybe I would have.

Instead, I said, “Play the recording.”

Ethan tapped the file.

The room heard everything.

My father mentioning fitness.

My mother warning me not to make this ugly.

Claire saying I needed to stay quiet.

The sound of the cup breaking.

Claire’s voice.

Maybe now you’ll stay quiet.

Then my mother.

No police. Claire made a mistake.

The officer’s expression changed.

My father stopped speaking.

Claire’s crying became silent.

The paramedic looked at Ethan.

“We need to transport her now.”

Ethan nodded.

He helped lift me onto the stretcher.

As they rolled me past my family, my mother reached toward me.

I turned my face away.

She let her hand fall.
